Janette Slack

Female, multi-disciplined and working at the crossroads of East and West: if anybody embodies the new music industry of the 21st century, it’s label boss, composer, model and DJ Janette Slack. Starting her career as a 17-year-old in Hong Kong, she played vinyl records, promoted nights, hustled hard and soon found herself being flown out to the US, Canada and Australia. A stint in London saw her studying music production while working in legendary Camden record shop Vinyl Addiction and moonlighting at breaks label Finger Lickin’. Gigs at famous clubs like Ministry of Sound, Fabric, The Cross, Cargo, The Egg and fantasy night Torture Garden soon followed, the latter segueing into a sensational seven-year residency—her debut album, 2011’s Torture Garden Session, offers an aural window into those unforgettable nights.

Since returning to Asia in 2014, Janette has played at music festivals including Secret Island Party, Clockenflap and Macau’s Ultra Festival, toured Europe, Thailand and Australia and rocked venues ranging from the Ritz-Carlton, Bump and Beatship to Fly, Lily & Bloom and Kee Club. Her fashion sense and marathon party mixes at private-island parties and aboard luxury cruises have made her the city’s preeminent DJ of choice for lavish and eyebrow-raising nights, while her skills behind the mixing console have seen the prodigious composer, studio engineer and producer release half a dozen singles since 2012 – the year she established her own label, Slack Trax. Whether it’s afterhours in a secret club or soundtracking a fashion catwalk, Janette has stamped her reputation (as Time Out once declared) as ‘The city’s music boss’.

Towards the end 2016 Janette made her debut in South Africa, touring there for 1 month playing at legendary rock festivals such as ‘Rocking The Daisies’ to private members clubs and party fund raisers for Africa Burn. (Afrika’s Burningman). Straight after she headed to London to headline The Coronet Theatre (Charlie Chaplin’s first ever venue he performed) to DJ at Torture Garden’s Halloween Ball to a crowd of 3000. Following with some gigs in Croatia and arrive back in time to play at Clockenflap. Studio projects this year have included remixing 5 tracks for Canto Pop legend Sandy Lam Yik Lim, and working with Anthony Lun Wing Leung. Janette continues to give production lessons on Logic 9 & X, and DJ lessons in her studio, and is currently remixing with for George Clinton’s band Parliament Funkadelic and Rupaul Drag Race famed Manila Luzon.
